The most popular months to move in the United States are May- September, which is no surprise, in fact 80% of the population that plans on moving will do so in these warmer months.  Coordinating a move during summer months, when you may not have to contend with wet weather and if you have children transitioning them to a new school may be easier during the school break.  The other ‘no surprise’ of moving is the stress!  While it may seem like selling or purchasing a home may be where most of the stress lays it is often the packing and moving of your items to this new home that can really be the stress kicker.  I have moved my family multiple times, in fact we’ve averaged a move every 2.5 years, this doesn’t include the remodel we did in one of the homes which included kitchen and floors, and if you’ve ever done that kind of remodel then you know that also require packing. Over the course of these moves I’ve learned a few tips and tricks and today I’m sharing my best moving hacks as well as a few links to my favorite moving supplies.

Now if you have ever moved before you know that clearing out things you don’t need and doing a few runs to your local donation center are always a good idea prior to packing. There is nothing worse than using your energy of packing something up hauling it to your new home and then realizing that you don’t want it. So I am going to assume that you know to get rid of the junk, rif-raf and that ball gown that doesn’t fit you anymore for the purposes of this article.

Box Label System

I have tried a few different Box labeling systems and I have used the same system for my last 2 moves and it worked beautifully. I use a color coded system for my moves. Each Room or Area of the NEW home is given a color and this color correlates to a piece of Colored Masking Tape . As an Example

Boy Room Green
Kitchen Purple
Play Room Red
Primary Bedroom Yellow

Once a box is packed I put a piece of the colored tape on a few sides of the box with a general note of what’s in the box written on the piece of tape.  If you have kids this is a great job for them. On moving day before a single box comes in the house I walk around and put the color of tape that goes with each room on the door to the room and if it a room without a door I usually put the tape on the wall at the entrance to the area.  This way as the moving truck is unloaded people know what room the boxes belong to without continually asking you. I especially like this trick if you are using movers as it helps them unload quickly and if you have children you don’t have to put their names all over everything.

Day of arrival

I do my best when we move to have beds assembled and made for our first night in the new home.  I usually wash and pack bedding into a  Large Moving Tote along with fresh PJ’s and I place this tote in my car on move day so that there is no way it get displaced. I’ve used these totes from Amazon a few times and they hold up great. They are also a good way to move blankets, collections of stuffed animals, as well as throw pillows without having to stuff them into a box.

Moving can be stressful, but having a packing system and fresh bedding on move day can help to give your move some organization.
